IW Foundation Health Library:
Clinical Trials

There are many clinical trials going on at all times. Some are sponsored by drug manufacturers hoping that sucess in the dog will lead to clinical trials in humans, and some are pure research, often at veterinary schools. In a treatment trial, depending on the trial methodology, your dog may receive a placebo or one of several alternate treatments instead of the treatment being tested. Participation in studies, however, may benefit future dogs, even if it doesn't end up helping yours. Consult with your veterinarian as to the risks versus the possible benefits of any clinical trial you are considering for your dog.
