The Irish Wolfhound Lifetime Cardiac Study has 3,684 individual electrocardiograms (EKGs) in the database. Since the study closed in 2010 we have continued to add and monitor EKGs. It appears that the incidence of atrial fibrillation has decreased.

To validate this observation, EKGs from 2000-2007 will be compared with EKGs from 2007 to 2014. These ranges include 1 to 2 generations of tested dogs. There is a marked increase in incidence of atrial fibrillation with age and therefore EKGs from each age group will be compared.

Dogs will be gently restrained in a standing position for an electrocardiogram (EKG). The EKG will be evaluated for atrial fibrillation and incorporated into a statistical database, including diagnosis, heart rate, sex and age.

The statistics for the two 7 year periods will be compared to determine the rate of atrial fibrillation at each age.
